enabling positive practice
A teacher who loves learning earns the right and the ability to help others learn.
There is, in fact no teaching without learning. One requires the other.
By learning you will teach; by teaching you will learn.
Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two together.
+ socio-emotional development, the factors affecting this, and how positive psychological practices can enhance this
+ safe, productive and supportive relationships in school communities
+ continuing development of school staff confidence, understanding, and skills, to support high needs students whose behaviour is problematic and uphold a safe learning environment for all
+ effective and engaging classroom environments
+ safe, nurturing whole school environments
My particular interests and areas of expertise are:
I have considerable experience in
+ enabling educator professional learning, through face-to-face presentations and interactive workshops, and through the development of self-managed learning programs for teaching and ancillary staff
+ developing and providing learning programs for whole staffs and particular professional groups, including school leaders; counsellors; managment teams; classroom teachers - preservice, early career, and experienced; school services officers; and support services staff
+ developing, implementing and reviewing policy and effective practice for safe and positive learning environments, at local and system levels
through my work as school principal, R-12 and secondary; as a state-wide project and policy officer for DECD Child and Student Wellbeing; and, most recently, as a private consultant.
While a DECD policy officer, I developed and provided familiarisation workshops in the cross-sector child protection guidelines Protective Practices for Staff and Respondng to Problem Sexual Behaviour, for school and pre-school leaders, school-based counsellors, and specialised program instructors. I co-presented the site leaders' workshops on Managing Allegations of Sexual Misconduct across the state. I am trained in the Keeping Safe curriculum and have current Child-related Employment Clearance.
I have also worked as a lecturer and program manager at university level and briefly as a unit manager in the public sector.
Most recently I have enjoyed the opportunity of contributing to training programs for educators developed by the Wellbeing and Resilience Centre at SAHMRI. This has included presentations on:
- Broadening and Building positive emotions
- Engagement - mindfulness and flow
- Growth Mindset
as well as involvement in the school leadership development program.
